The Long County High School softball team kept rolling last week, winning their fifth game in a row by defeating Region 2-AA foe St. Vincent’s Academy, 12-4, Friday in Ludowici.
The Lady Tide put on a hitting clinic in the game. Taylor Poole and Brittany Smiley led the way, as Poole batted 2 for 3 with four RBIs and Smiley batted 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Alyssa Anderson, Harley Dawson and Samantha Garcia each had one hit. Dawson and Emily Hester split the Tide’s pitching duties. Dawson started and went four innings to pick up the win, allowing two hits, two walks and two unearned runs while striking out eight batters. Hester allowed one hit, two unearned runs, three walks and struck out two.
Lady Tide head coach Brian Thomas said that the difference in the game was a few timely hits by his team. He also said that one of the primary reasons his team is playing better in recent weeks is that the players are hitting the ball better.
LCHS Athletic Director Karen Swindell praised the players and the coaching staff.
“Coach Thomas and his coaching staff have done an outstanding job preparing the girls for this season,” she said. “I am looking forward to the rest of the season, and hopefully we will be able to secure a playoff berth.”
With the win, Long County improved its overall record to 8-8 and its region mark to 6-4 going into Monday. The Tide currently are in fifth place in the region standings.
Long County was scheduled to face region opponents McIntosh County on Monday and Vidalia on Tuesday. A story on those two games will be in this Friday’s paper.
On Thursday, the Lady Tide has a huge game when they face Jeff Davis. As of Monday, the Lady Yellow Jackets had an 11-2 overall record, a region mark of 8-1, and were ranked No. 4 in the state by MaxPreps. When the two teams met last month, the Lady Tide fell in a competitive game, 5-0.
Thursday’s game begins at
5:55 p.m. in Hazlehurst.
