Army 'Idol' starts Thursday

Round one of the “Operation Rising Star,” the Army’s equivalent of “American Idol,” begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rocky’s Warrior Zone.

The top three singers will win from $100 to $500. Round two of the competition will be on Sept. 26 and round three on Oct. 3 at Rocky’s. Judges will pick winners from performances at the start of Oktoberfest on Oct. 12 at Club Stewart.

Audience vote at semi-finals and finals will count for half of winner’s score.

A “Spirit Award” will be given to the unit or FRG with the best presence at all four competitions, regardless of contestant participation. The $100 to $300 prize will be deposited in the unit/FRG fund.

Family carnival

A family carnival, featuring rides and family fun, opens Thursday on Walker Field.

Hours are 6-10 p.m. Thursday, 6-11 p.m. Friday, noon-11 p.m. Saturday and 1-11 p.m. Sunday.

The rides range from a train for kids to a ferris wheel and the Gravitron.

Families can save by buying ride tickets in quantity. Also, arm band tickets can be purchased for $25 per night per person for unlimited rides. Food and games are individually priced.

Weapons, coolers and outside food/beverages are prohibited.

Skeet shoot

Military ID cardholders are invited to a 50-Bird Skeet Shoot at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Stewart Skeet Range.

The competition will include expert, intermediate, novice and ladies/youth divisions. First-place wins $75. Additional prizes will be based on number of entries in each category.

Registration ends Saturday and is $35 per person. The cost includes lunch.

Blues & BBQ

The 10thannual Blues & BBQ Festival, featuring music, food, fun and free kids activities will be in downtown Hinesville from 2-11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Hosted by the Hinesville Area Arts Council, it is supported by Fort Stewart FMWR.

Entertainment starts at 4:30, featuring “Soul Gravy” followed by headliner “Swamp Cabbage” and “3rd Class Citizens.”

Judges pick the best barbecued pork, chicken and ribs. Plus, there’s a people’s choice best category.

Strongman, strongwoman

Find out if you are the strongest man or woman at Fort Stewart/Hunter during The Rock Strongman & Strongwoman Competition.

It will be held at 4 p.m. Sept. 26 in the 4th IBCT Fitness Center. Register by Friday. Transportation to and from Hunter provided.

Bass tournament

Compete for prizes in the Catch & Release Bass Tournament at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at Metz Pond.

Prizes will be awarded in adult and youth categories, based on the weight of up to five bass.

Participants can fish from the bank or a bass boat. Live bait prohibited. Boat rentals available at Holbrook Equipment Center to military ID cardholders with a boat safety card.

Participants must have Georgia and Stewart/Hunter fishing permit (unless age 15 and under). And everyone can compete. For details, call 435-8061 at Stewart or 315-5163 at Hunter.

 

Kids fishing

Children, 15 and younger, can each catch up to five catfish at the Kids Fishing Event from 7-10 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Hallstrom Lake Recreation Area on Hunter.

There’s no charge, and no fishing license is required. Bring your pole, limited bait available.

Golf 4 Life

The next “Golf 4 Life” clinic at Hunter Golf Course is Sept. 28 from 9-10 a.m.

It is one of a series of clinics that cover a new topic each time. Beginners can learn the basics, while novice golfers improve.

Terror in the wild

Wild Adventures Terror in the Wild promises scares and nightmares each night and Leisure Travel is planning a trip to the Valdosta theme park Sept. 28. It is not recommended for children under 12.

The $55 per person cost includes transportation and admission. Registration will close Sept. 26.

Teen dance

A Fall Dance for youth, 13-17, will be from 8-10 p.m. Sept. 28 at Corkan Family Fun Center. The cost is $2 per person, or $3 per couple.

Pickup by parents or guardians will be at 10:15 p.m. Fort Stewart curfew rules apply.

Dinner and bowling

Stewart Bowling Center offers families a discount night of bowling from 2-7 p.m. Sept. 29, with bowlers’ club basket, fries or onion rings and refillable drink.

The price of $30 gets a family of five 10-total games bowling, five shoe rentals and dinner.

Post-wide garage sale

Got stuff you’re ready to part with? The Great FMWR Post-Wide Housing Yard Sale, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 5, is an opportunity get rid of items, and make a few dollars.

Register at Fort Stewart Sports Office or Tominac Fitness Center at Hunter to have your sale listed on a map that will be given to shoppers.

Only residents of post housing can sell, but everyone, including civilians, can shop.
