Lady Tide gets win at Claxton

POSTED: September 18, 2013 10:56 a.m.

The Long County High School softball team won at Claxton, 11-3, on Saturday in a make-up game that had been delayed due to the weather.
The Blue Tide improved their overall record to 9-11; their Region 2-AA record remained 6-7.
Long County starting pitcher Emily Hester pitched all five innings, walking two batters, giving up five hits, two earned runs and striking out five.
“I thought Emily did a great job of throwing strikes and forcing contact,” Long County head coach Brian Thomas said.
At the plate, Ashley Desbiens went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Blue Tide. Brittany Smiley also was 3 for 4, Taylor Poole went 2 for 2, Katie Estill was 2 for 3, and Harley Dawson was 2 for 4.
“We hit the ball better and that’s very encouraging going into the last two weeks of the season,” Thomas said. “I feel like if we are playing our best softball, then we will have a great shot at making the region playoffs.”
As of Monday, Long County was in sixth place in the 2-AA standings.  With Jeff Davis and Vidalia sitting comfortably atop the region at 12-1 and 10-3, Long County is vying for one of the remaining two playoff spots. The next three spots were held by Bacon County (7-3), Bryan County (8-4) and Toombs County (6-6).
On Monday and Tuesday, Long County was scheduled to play Bryan County in Pembroke and Bacon County in Ludowici. Results were unavailable at press time.
On Thursday, the Blue Tide have another region contest when they travel to Pearson to take face Atkinson County (1-11).  When the two teams met last month, the Lady Tide beat the Lady Rebels, 8-0.
Results from all three games will be in this Friday’s paper.
