The Long County varsity baseball team won their home opener Monday against the Tattnall County Battle Creek Warriors,15-2.
With Blake Strickland on the mound, the Blue Tide jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings. Strickland also had a double in the second to set the tone for the rest of the batters.
Tattnall county got on the board in the top of the third with their first run of the game, but it brought little comfort as the Long County team put up seven runs in the bottom of the inning, with Brandon Smith smacking a double.
Through the third, the Warriors had committed four errors, and the Tide had managed six hits, resulting in the score being 12-1 at the end of three innings.
In the top of the fourth, Tattnall County was able to get their second run of the game, but with Paul Lewandoski hitting a triple in the bottom of the fourth and with Blake Strickland crushing a home run, the Tide led 15-2.
Earl Freeman came in to relieve Strickland in the 5th and final inning, closing out the game for the Tide.
In the game, Long County had 10 hits and four errors, while only surrendering two hits.
The Blue Tide needed to get a win after losing to both Pierce County and Ware County this past weekend in a tournament in Waycross.
“We are making progress,” Long County coach Wayne Sasser said. “We’re still in the early stages of the season, trying to find our best ball players and get them in the right position.”
He added: “We lost Stetson Strickland this past weekend with an injury to his elbow on his pitching arm, so we are limited at pitching and having to work this out.”
The Blue Tide travel back to Waycross tomorrow to take on the Atkinson County Rebels and then are back home again on Friday to take on Liberty County High School in Ludowici. The game in Waycross is at 4:30 p.m. and the home game against the Panthers is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
