Lady Panthers advance to round 2 of region playoffs

Liberty County High School’s softball team won the best of three series against Burke County in the first round of the Region 3-AAAA playoffs Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Panthers played in Waynesboro where they shutout Burke County, 8-0, in the first game and downed the Lady Bears, 6-1, in game two to advance to the next round.
Standout sophomore pitcher Kathryn Carter pitched a shutout, no-hitter, earning eight straight strikeouts against the Lady Bears. Carter finished the game with 10 strikeouts.
At bat, Carter was 2-of-3 with a double. Freshman Kaleigh Fisher was 2-of-3 with 2 RBIs. Rachel Smith was 3-for-3 with 1 RBI. The Lady Panthers had a solid performance at bat, managing 13 hits in the first game.
In game two, Fisher took the mound and the win, tossing 9 strikeouts and walking 2. Fisher also went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles at bat. Carter was 2-of-4 with a double and a triple. Serena Davenport got 1 RBI.
The girls will travel to Guyton Tuesday to play South Effingham. This season, the Lady Mustangs are 2-0 against Liberty.
Liberty is 9-11 overall and 4-4 in the region. Tuesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Bradwell out
In other softball news, the Lady Tigers of Bradwell Institute lost their first two games of the Region 3-AAAAA playoffs Thursday at Paulson Field in Savannah. The scores were  12-0 against Richmond Hill and 9-1 against Glynn Academy.
