After being off last week, the Long County High School football team will be back on the field tonight to face Toombs County in Lyons.
The Blue Tide go into the game with a 1-5 overall record and a 0-5 mark in Region 2-AA.  After opening the year with a victory over Lanier County, they have dropped five straight region games to Benedictine, Vidalia, Atkinson County, Bryan County and Bacon County.
The Bulldogs (2-5, 1-5), like the Blue Tide, have slim playoff hopes, but a non-losing season remains a possibility. Their wins this year have been over Montgomery County and Jeff Davis, while their losses have come at the hands of Bryan County, Bacon County, Metter, McIntosh County and Benedictine.
On paper, the Bulldogs appear to have the offensive edge tonight, averaging 23 points a game compared to the Blue Tide’s 11 points.  On the defensive side, both teams appear to be even, with Long County giving up 34 points a game compared to Toombs’ 27.
In looking at three common opponents faced this season, both teams look evenly matched. Long County lost to Bryan County 55-21, while Toombs lost 34-27. Against Bacon County, the Blue Tide lost, 21-6 while the Bulldogs fell, 18-0. Both teams were blown out by Benedictine.
However, even though the teams appear evenly matched, Toombs County has dominated the series. The Bulldogs have won all three games, including last year’s contest, 34-20.  To make matters even worse for Long County, tonight’s game is homecoming for the Bulldogs, so the Blue Tide will have a hostile home crowd to deal with.
But even though the Blue Tide will be on the road, head coach Ron Flott has had two weeks to get his team prepared for tonight’s game and history has shown that Long County will play hard until the final tick of the clock no matter what the score is.
Kickoff is at 7:30.
