According to race organizer Patrick Boyle, the fourth annual Sunbury 5K race, held Oct. 5, was the most successful to date in terms of fundraising efforts.
Presented by Merritt & Grinstead, Attorney at Law, the 3.1 mile run/walk netted more than $5,500 for the Wounded Warrior Project and the American Diabetes Association.
Boyle said it was the largest donation to date.
He said 145 runners/walkers participated in the event that started at the Sunbury Crab Company and wound its way around scenic Sunbury and Fort Morris State Historic Site.
He said the Village of Sunbury community and residents have embraced the race, with many homeowners cheering on and encouraging the runners to go the distance. After winding their way through the neighborhood, the runners entered Fort Morris, affording them breathtaking views of the coastal marshes. The race ended where it started, back at the Sunbury Crab Company.
Boyle said the race continues to grow and be successful due to their sponsors. In addition to Merritt & Grinstead, sponsors included Darsey & Black and Associates, the Sunbury Crab Company, Fort Morris State Historic Site, Atlantic Foot & Ankle, Jimmy Shanken of Coldwell Banker, Mickey Rountree Insurance, Coastal Electric, Ogeechee Marine, Coastal Turf & Landscaping, M&M Motors and Dorchester Shooting Preserve.
