Pinckney Island refuge to close for deer hunt

POSTED: November 4, 2013 11:34 a.m.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge will be closed to the public for two full days, Friday-Saturday, while the refuge’s annual deer hunt is being conducted.
Due to the small size of the refuge and the large number of hunters participating in the hunt, it is unsafe for other visitors to use the refuge at the same time. The entrance gate will remain closed after sunset on Thursday, all day Friday and Saturday, and will re-open at sunrise, Sunday, Nov. 10.
The two-day Pinckney Island gun hunt for deer is held annually in November, and 80 hunters are drawn from nearly 200 applicants.
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is one of more than 560 national wildlife refuges located throughout the United States. The 4,053-acre refuge is home to endangered American wood storks, bald eagles, neo-tropical migratory songbirds, large concentrations of white ibis, herons, egrets and American alligators.
