Smiley Elementary School on Friday held its annual Trunk-or-Treat celebration in the school’s parking lot.

Principal David Edwards said the day was fun for all.

"We had 47 businesses, churches and other civic organizations or volunteers come out today and set up a booth," he said.

Edwards said Trunk-or-Treat has grown every year, along with the number of students at the school.

"When the school first opened, there were around 600 kids here. Now, we have 1,200," he said. "It’s a day that all of the children look forward to, and I want to thank all of the volunteers who continually come out and support it."

Each volunteer set up their vehicle in the parking lot. Many of them decorated it to match the costume that they dressed in. District 157 state Rep. Delvis Dutton was on hand for the day and said that this was his eighth year of participation.

"Every year, Long County has a good turnout for their Trunk-or-Treat, and all of these businesses coming out and interacting with the kids, shows the children that they are important to them," he said.

Long County Sheriff’s Office members had two vehicles at the school giving out candy. Sheriff Craig Nobles said that the day has become an event that everyone looks forward to.

"There is a lot of camaraderie in Long County, and you see it in the interaction that you have out here," he said. "Everyone always has a good time, and it provides a safe place for the kids to enjoy Halloween and get plenty of candy."
