The Long County High School football team on Friday dropped a 45-24 decision to McIntosh County in Darien.
The Buccaneers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but the Blue Tide came right back, driving deep into McIntosh County territory. Facing fourth-and-goal, LCHS head coach Ron Flott decided to go for a touchdown instead of a field goal. Flott called on freshman quarterback Dylan Stewart, who kept the ball and dove across the goal line for the touchdown. The extra-point attempt was blocked to make the score 7-6.
After that, things went south for the Blue Tide. The Buccaneers scored 19 straight points to go into halftime leading, 26-6. In the second half, Long County fought back with three more touchdowns, but those were answered by McIntosh County with touchdowns of its own.
With the Region 2-AA loss, the Blue Tide fell to 2-7 overall and 1-7 in the region, while the Buccaneers improved to 5-4 and 5-3, respectively.
Long County will wrap up its season in a special Thursday night game that will be televised by WSAV. The Blue Tide will host Metter, which comes in with a 6-3 overall record and a 5-3 region mark. According to their records, the Tigers appear to have the advantage over the Blue Tide, and in looking at the two teams on paper, they also appear to be the stronger. Long County averages 18 points a game compared to Metter’s 23 points. On defense, Long County allows 33 points, compared to the Tigers’ 22. MaxPreps.com has Metter ranked No. 22 in AA, while Long County is No. 48.
Prior to the game, the senior-night ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Members of the LCHS football team, cheerleading squad and band will be honored.
Kickoff will be at 7.
