Bradwell Institute ended its first season with head coach Adam Carter with a 38-13 win over Groves High Friday night in Garden City.
Carter said the team missed one goal this season.
“We are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs,” he said.
But the coach did say the season was upbeat as the Tigers ended 4-6 overall and 3-4 in Region 3A-AAAA, the best record since 2009.
The Tigers had the game wrapped up by half, leading 31-0.
The Tiger defense scored the first touchdown on a 78-yard Deangelo Smith kick return. Hubert Anderson added a touchdown in the first quarter on a 45-yard run. Robert Miller kicked the extra point.
In the second quarter, the Tigers scored on a one-yard run by Sammie Clayton and converted for two-points.
Smith later scored on a two-yard run and Miller made the extra point. Before going into the locker room, the Tigers marched downfield to set up a Miller field goal.
Quarterback LaBaron Anthony scored in the third quarter off a 61-yard run and Miller hit the extra point.
The Rebels finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter off passes of 6 and 11 yards.
Anthony went 9-of-15 for 105 passing yards and the offense rushed for 184 yards on 21 attempts. Anthony led the ground game with 91 yards on 8 carries. Anderson had 54 yards on 3, Clayton rushed for 27 yards on 3 carries and Smith had 19 yards on 4.
Carter said the last-game win will carry momentum into spring and summer workouts and conditionings. He praised the players for coming together under difficult circumstances this year.
“We are pleased with the amount of work and time our kids put into this season,” Carter said. “We did not come out on the right end of some games, but I thought they came ready week-in and week-out. Learning a new system on offense and defense, along with changing the mentality of the program is not an easy task and I think they have handled it well.”
