Liberty County High School’s football team accomplished its first goal of the season — earning a spot in the Georgia High School Association Class AAAA state tournament.
Tonight, the new season begins. The Panthers face Westover High at 7:30 in Albany. The Panthers and the Patriots both hold 8-2 overall records. The Patriots went 7-0 in their region.
Each team has a star linebacker surrounded by a wealth of other talented players.
Patriot linebacker Antravious Parks has tallied 63 solo tackles, 33 assists, including 15 for loss of yards. He has six sacks for minus-40 yards. Parks averages 10.7 tackles a game, while Liberty star linebacker Raekwon McMillan averages 15.2.
“They are very stout defensively and they have a five-star junior defensive linebacker,” Panther coach Kirk Warner said after watching film. “When you look at them, you quickly notice how well they run to the ball.”
The Patriots offense is averaging 133.4 passing yards per game to the Panthers’ 98, but Warner thinks his defense can cause enough trouble to keep the Patriots off-balance.
“Offensively, they are not as refined as other teams we’ve gone up against,” Warner said. “But they won their region even against perennial powerhouse Cairo … Statesboro is definitely the team I would compare them with.”

The Patriots
by the numbers
•89-of-148 passing for 1,334 yards, eight touchdowns
• 270 carries for 1,678 yards, 15 touchdowns

The Panthers
by the numbers
•58-of-133 passing for
980 yards, 10 touchdowns
•376 carries for 2,632 yards, 28 touchdowns
