The Long County High School boys’ basketball team on Saturday lost its season opener  to New Hampstead, 66-54, in Ludowici.
Early on, it looked like old times for the Blue Tide as they opened with a 13-4 run. However, with aggressive play, New Hampstead fought back into the game, going on an 11-0 run to even the game at 23 at the half.
In the third period things began to unravel for Long County. Unable to match the height of their opponents, the Blue Tide got beat on the boards. New Hampstead out-shot Long County 2 to 1 in the third period en route to a 51-37 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Long County didn’t get closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Long County’s Vanda Vereen Jr. had 25 points to lead all scorers. The Blue Tide’s James Francis had nine points, and Brendon Scott added five points. Though his team fell in their season opener, Long County head coach Deshon Brock praised his players’ efforts.
“We did play hard. We just didn’t execute as well as I would have liked us to,” Brock said. “We have go to work on all phases of our game and improve our execution.”
The Blue Tide are back on the court Friday when they host Tattnall County. The series between the two teams is even, with each school having won five games. Last year, the Battle Creek Warriors won, 63-51, at home. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
