Long County boys get first win of season

POSTED: November 29, 2013 9:51 a.m.

The Long County boys’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season last Friday by downing archrival Wayne County, 54-47, in Ludowici.
Long County took a 25-23 lead going into halftime. But in the second half, the Blue Tide asserted their dominance.
Brendon Scott and James Francis each had 13 points for Long County. Vanda Vereen Jr. added nine points, and Danaron Anderson put up eight.
“I thought we came to compete and played hard,” Blue Tide head coach Deshon Brock said.
Brock made some changes in the lineup, placing Vereen at shooting guard and Scott at point guard. According to the coach, this made a big difference in how the team performed. He also said that Francis played well in the win.
“Brendon Scott was huge for us running the point guard,” Brock said. “This allowed us to move Vanda to the two spot … James Francis also had his best game of the season. We need him to play like this every night if we are going to have a chance.”
The Blue Tide, who have a 1-2 record this season, are off until Tuesday, when they have to travel to Savannah to face Benedictine Military School in their first Sub-Region 2B-AA contest. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Tide lost to Wayne County, 48-39, last Friday, but no information was available by press time.
