The Long County High School basketball teams on Friday picked up Region 2B-AA wins over Bacon County in Ludowici.
The Blue Tide boys’ team claimed a dramatic 59-57 victory, while the Lady Tide used a huge fourth quarter to pull away for a 49-36 win.
In the boys’ game, Bacon County, which came into the game undefeated, had a five-point lead after one period of play, and took a 25-22 lead in at the half.  But in the third period, the Blue Tide outscored the Raiders, 22-12, to go on top.  In the fourth period, Bacon County fought back to tie the game. However, with four seconds left, Long County’s Brendon Scott drove to the net and made a picture-perfect layup for the winning points.
Vanda Vereen Jr. led the Blue Tide with 28 points. With the win the Long County boys had a 2-3 overall record and a 1-1 region mark, while the Raiders fell to 4-1 and 2-1, respectively.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Tide trailed at halftime, 22-18. But just like they have all season, they continued to battle and after three periods of play, they led, 30-29. In the final period, the Lady Tide dominated defensively and outscored Bacon County, 19-7, to give new head coach Brian Todd his first win.
The Lady Tide were 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the region going into Saturday’s action, while the Lady Raiders were 0-5 and 0-3.
Both Long County teams faced Liberty County on Saturday in Flemington. Results will be in Wednesday’s Coastal Courier.
