Sponsored by the Georgia Peanut Commission, the Georgia 4-H “Peanutrition” Contest challenges 4-H members to concoct a snack containing peanuts or peanut butter.
Liberty County 4-H recently hosted the contest by having 4-H members submit peanut recipes to the extension office. Six students were chosen to create their recipes Dec. 12 for a panel of judges.
Recipes were evaluated based on appeal, creativity, nutrition and flavor. The competition is designed to help 4-H students learn simple cooking techniques while they learn about the importance of peanuts as an agricultural commodity in Georgia.
According to the Georgia Peanut Commission, 1.7 million tons of peanuts were produced in Georgia in 2012 and accounted for more than half of the peanuts grown in the United States.
The following students participated: Nadia Crowley, Malia Plumay and Sarah Wiser from Taylors Creek Elementary; Landon Leonard and Cameron Wheeless from Liberty Elementary; and Allahsia Muhammad from Lyman Hall Elementary. Wiser won top honors with her chocolate monkey peanut-butter shake. Wheeless placed second with his grilled peanut-butter, banana and chocolate-chip sandwich. And Crowley placed third with her peanut-butter bagel delight. All participants received certificates and T-shirts. Older 4-H members Jordyn James, Terradonte James and Sophia Rodriguez served as teen leaders and judges. The contest was coordinated by 4-H program assistant Gypsy James.
