Legendary actor and director Robert Redford has a film new to DVD and digital download. Billed as an action-thriller, it’s called “The Company You Keep.”
In it, Redford, who also directs, plays Jim, a lawyer and single father whose world is turned upside down when brash young reporter Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf) exposes his true identity. Thirty years ago, Redford’s character was an antiwar radical and remains wanted for murder. With Ben’s exposure, Jim must now go on the run. The FBI is in hot pursuit, but Jim’s focus turns to tracking down the one person who can clear his name.
The most remarkable thing about the film is its cast. Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Nick Nolte, Sam Elliott, Stanley Tucci and Chris Cooper all appear.
As for the rest of the film, the story is there, it’s an interesting tale with a twist or two, but pacing and action are lacking. “All The President’s Men,” this film is not. Redford isn’t quite mysterious enough, and LaBeouf isn’t likeable. I don’t think his character is intended to be likeable, but I think he could have been more despicable or more charming, one extreme or the other.
I’d really like to know what’s up with LaBeouf’s hair. Is that meant to be reporter hair? Do reporters not shower in some world? I don’t understand.
The film isn’t terrible, but I just can’t say that I’m a fan. This one really could have been shaped into more of a blockbuster.

McBrayer was not able to tape her video review this week.
