Lady Tide fall to Portal in tourney final

POSTED: January 3, 2014 9:41 a.m.

The bubble burst on the Lady Tide Monday as they fell to the host team in the finals of the Portal Christmas Tournament.
After defeating Georgia Military School and Mt. Pisgah Christian, Long County was hoping for a sweep in the tourney, but a solid fourth quarter by Portal High School (5-4) ended those hopes.
In the first period, the Lady Panthers scratched their way to a 20-10 lead. But the Lady Tide defense shut out the home team in the second and the offense narrowed the gap to 20-18 at the half. In the third, both teams played well. But in the final period, Portal out shot Long, 12-3, to win 53-33.
“We played well. We just literally ran out of gas,” Lady Tide coach Brian Todd said. “I was proud of the way we fought all weekend.”
With the loss, Long County fell to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the 2B-AA sub-region standings. Tonight they are back on the court, taking on Metter High School in a big region game. The Lady Tigers have a 2-9 overall record and are 0-3 in the region.
The Long County girls tip off at 6 p.m. The boys follow at 7:30. The games are in Ludowici. Saturday, Long County is on the road, taking on Vidalia High School. The girls start at
4 p.m. and the boys at 5:30.
