From 1993-96, Steve Cotrell caught for the Commerce Tigers baseball team. Saturday, Cotrell returns to his alma mater. But this time he will be calling the shots from the visitors dugout as his Liberty County Panthers take on Commerce at 4:15 p.m.
“Well, I kind of have mixed feelings, but I’m a Liberty County Panther now,” Cotrell said. “The Commerce Tigers will always be in the back of my mind but Liberty County is my stomping ground now. There will be a lot of family and friends there but I expect the kids to play well, get after it and get a win.”
Before playing Commerce, the Panthers will play the Tigers’ rival Jefferson at noon.
Tommy Knight, who Cotrell played under at LaGrange College, coaches the Dragons. Jefferson is a formidable opponent. They finished 22-8 last season and return nine starters.
“I want to get the kids on the road and play somebody different,” Cotrell said. “Originally, we were going to play a double-header with Jefferson but they could only play one game so I called Walt at Commerce and he needed a game. It should be a fun day for everyone.”
The Panthers will leave LCHS at 5:30 on Saturday morning and arrive back home around midnight.
