It was clear that the Long County High School girls’ basketball team was outmatched when it faced Liberty County on Tuesday in Ludowici.
Liberty County topped Long County, 61-27, in non-region action.
Liberty County’s Briana Reece led all scorers with 14 points. Bryonna Graham had 12 points. Jaelynn Jones added 10 points. For Long County, Elexxus Wrighton had 11 points, and Sam Garcia scored seven.
Long County head coach Brian Todd said one reason for his team struggling in the game was several of his better ball-handlers getting into foul trouble early.
But even though the Lady Tide couldn’t match the Lady Panthers on the scoreboard, he still had positive comments about his team.
“I’m proud of my team’s effort,” he said. “Liberty was taller than us and more physical, but my girls’ kept fighting and never quit. I’m also real proud of how Elexxus and Coop (Keshawdra Cooper) played. They fought hard against some bigger girls all night.”
Panthers head coach Carolyn Kelly said she was impressed with Long County’s effort and felt her team could have played better.
With the win, the Lady Panthers improved to 8-7, while their Region 3A-AAAA record remained at 0-1.
The Lady Tide fell to 4-11 overall and stayed 2-2 in Region 2B-AA.
Tonight, Long County travels to Pearson to face Atkinson County (5-6) in region action at 6, while Liberty hosts South Effingham at 6.
On Saturday, Long County faces Wayne County (3-1) at 6 p.m. in Jesup, and the Lady Panthers host McIntosh County Academy at 4 p.m.
