Two Bradwell Institute students will compete in the Lee Murray/Georgia Athletic Coaches Association State Weightlifting Championship on Saturday in Perry.
Junior Reuben Boone and senior Devon Russell finished second in the 171-180 pound weight class and 140-and-under weight class respectively at the GACA Area 6 Championships in Statesboro on Feb. 17 to qualify.
Boone lifted a combined 965 pounds. He parallel squatted 445, bench pressed 270 and power-cleaned 250.
Russell lifted a combined 770 pounds. He parallel squatted 355, bench pressed 210 and power cleaned 205.
At the area championships, the Tigers placed sixth out of 15 schools.
Weightlifting coach Aaron Mock said the lifters have been working hard in the weight room and he looks forward to them competing again next year.
Twenty-four students participated in the area meet, with several setting personal bests.
Mock was particularly delighted with the performance of freshmen Sheldon Barnes and Darvean Herron, who competed in the 181-190 pound class. Barnes lifted a combined 765 and Herron lifted a combined 725.
