A Hinesville man was killed Friday morning and a Savannah woman was seriously when the vehicles they were driving collided on Highway 196, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The wreck occurred at 7:24 a.m. about six miles northeast of Hinesville.

GSP Trooper, J.A. Lewis said Asencion Contreas Evangelista, 52, was driving to his construction job in Richmond Hill when the accident occurred. Evangelista, driving a 1990 Dodge Shadow, was reportedly struck head-on by a 2055 Lexus ES 330 driven by Cheryl E. Andelman, 62, of Savannah.

She was also believed to have been heading to work, but was unable to give her place of employment.

Witnesses reported Andelman had drifted into oncoming traffic, Lewis said, noting the impact sent both vehicles spinning, leaving them facing the opposite direction.

"Andelman's vehicle ended up facing east in the center lane, and Evangelista's ended up facing west, resting on the southwest shoulder of 196," Lewis said.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and airbags did deploy.

Evangelista was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to the GBI crime lab for autopsy.

Andelman was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah by ambulance. She is listed in critical but stable condition, Lewis said.

The wreck snarled morning traffic for nearly four hours. Traffic was diverted from Highway 196 to North Coastal Highway in Midway.

The highway is under construction.
