The Long County High School baseball team picked up its first win of the season Monday by defeating Tattnall County, 4-2, in Reidsville.
The win also was the first for new head coach Tyler Rogers. He said that he was pleased with the effort of his team.
“The difference in the game was the fact that we had no errors and only one passed ball,” Rogers said. “Offensively, the difference was we executed when we needed to.”
Blue Tide pitcher Phillip Swindell got the win in relief of starting pitcher Cody Fleck, who went four innings before being replaced.  Swindell allowed no runs and only one hit, struck out five batters and gave up three walks.  Fleck struck out three batters and walked two while allowing six hits and two earned runs.
Zach Duncan, Austin Mills and Brian Lester all batted 1 for 3.  Duncan also had one run batted in.
“Cole Ray and Ryan McGowan had some huge plays for us offensively that will not go into the stat book, but definitely helped with the game,” Rogers said.
According to the coach, one of the key points in the game was when Ray hit the ball to right field, and the Tattnall County outfielder was unable to make a play on the hit. That resulted in two Blue Tide runs. Rogers also said that in the sixth inning, with runners at second and third base, McGowan tapped a squeeze bunt that put Long County up, 3-2.
“Then, with two outs, Zach Duncan comes up and scores our fourth run with a hit up the middle,” Rogers said.
The Battle Creek Warriors fell to 1-1 with the loss.
The Blue Tide were scheduled to play Brunswick on Tuesday in Ludowici. Results from that game will be in Friday’s Courier.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, Long County plays a doubleheader at Dublin.
