Long Co. baseball team splits with Fighting Irish

POSTED: February 26, 2014 10:54 a.m.

The Long County High School baseball team split a nonregion doubleheader Saturday at Dublin.
The Blue Tide won the first game, 3-1, but dropped the second game, 15-2.
In the first game, Long County starting pitcher Phillip Swindell got the win by allowing one hit and three walks and striking out eight in five shutout innings. Cody Fleck got the save, going two innings and allowing three hits, one run and one walk with a strikeout.
Fleck went 2 for 3 at the plate, Tristan Goodro had one hit with two runs batted in and Swindell had a hit with an RBI.
In the second game, things didn’t go as well for the Blue Tide as the Irish found their rhythm.
“Dublin came out in the second game swinging the stick. We also made some costly errors … we just didn’t hit the ball near as well in the second game,” Long County coach Tyler Rogers said.
Zach Duncan pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up nine hits and nine runs.  He struck out two batters and walked one in the loss. Clay Strickland threw three innings with five hits, six runs and five walks. Ryan McGowan went two-thirds of an inning, striking out one batter and giving up a hit and a walk.
Cole Ray was 2 for 2 at the plate, while Austin Simmons went 1 for 2 with one run batted in.
“Dublin is a very talented team and well-coached,” Rogers said. “We proved the first game we can play with anyone, but you have to bring that A-game every game and we didn’t in the second.”
The Blue Tide were 2-2 overall going into Tuesday’s action, and though they have been up and down in those four games, Rogers said he is pleased so far.
“We still have some work to do, but I am happy where we are right now,” he said.
Long County was scheduled to play Tuesday at Claxton; results from that game will be in Friday’s Courier. At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the Blue Tide host McIntosh County (0-2 as of Tuesday) in their first Region 2-AA game of the year.
