The Long County High School girls’ soccer team remained unbeaten by defeating  Toombs County, 3-1, on Tuesday in Ludowici.
However, the Blue Tide came up a little short, falling to the Bulldogs, 3-2.
The Lady Tide had a 2-1 lead at halftime and added a security goal in the second half. Kelsey Higgason had two goals, and Alyssa Anderson had one.
“We fought hard. It was a grueling game to say the least … our defense kept us in the game until we could scratch some goals,” Lady Tide coach Brian Todd said. “Katie Estill made some huge saves for us, and Taylor Poole, Xena Luwellen, Megan Higgason and Harley Dawson hung in there all night, stopping their attempts.”
The coach said that all of his team played well, but that Nakia Hunter stood out as the team’s most-valuable player.
“She didn’t score, but she took charge handling the ball and distributing it to her teammates,” Todd said. “Nakia is a leader and very vocal on the field. She does whatever role she needs to, to help us succeed.”
With the Region 2-AA win, the Lady Tide improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the region.
In the boys’ game, the Blue Tide and the Bulldogs were tied, 2-2, at the halftime, but a Toombs score with minutes to play lifted the Bulldogs.  Alberto Nervarez and Aron Nervarez scored goals for Long County.
“I thought we played a great game and never gave up,” Blue Tide coach Paul Austin said. “We were in position to score throughout the game but didn’t finish.”
With the loss, the boys fell to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the region.
The Long County teams are back on the field today at Vidalia.  The girls’ game begins at 5 p.m., with the boys to follow.
