Lady Panthers fall in overtime, Panthers drop game to Wayne

POSTED: February 28, 2014 9:20 a.m.

Wayne County swept the Liberty County High School soccer teams Tuesday night in Jesup.
The Lady Panthers forced overtime but fell, 4-3. The Panther boys lost, 4-1.
Lady Panther soccer coach Jarvis McArthur said Wayne County held a 1-0 lead at the half. In the second half, freshman Sidney Wilkinson chipped one over the Yellow Jackets’ goalkeeper, tying the game, 1-1.
McArthur said the Yellow Jackets charged back, scoring two more goals to take a 3-1 advantage with 20 minutes left in regulation.
“But the Lady Panthers demonstrated pride and poise and clawed their way back into the game on goals by juniors Cortney Welch and Myesha Robinson, which sent the game to extra time,” the coach said.
The Yellow Jackets hit the winning goal with one minute remaining in overtime.
“We constantly stress the importance of being mentally tough and playing hard to the final horn, and the girls did that,” McArthur said.
The coach added he was pleased with what he called the gutsy play by senior Lynda Jimenez and juniors Rebecca Nelson, Tiffany Erickson, Janea White and Kayla Frazier. He added that Rebecca Nelson took over the goalkeeping duties for the game and played well.
The Panthers’ next match is March 4 at Brunswick.
Bradwell Institute will face Region 3-AAAAA opponent Jenkins High at 5 tonight in Savannah.
