BI wins Reading Bowl

POSTED: March 12, 2014 9:37 a.m.

Bradwell Institute won the 2014 Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Competition.
The victory makes the first time in history a Liberty County school has captured the state crown. The ninth annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl was held March 8 at the University of Georgia in Athens as part of the Georgia Children’s Literature Conference.
The Tigers beat out Marietta High School for the top spot. This was Bradwell’s second consecutive visit to the state match.
Midway Middle School also fared well, earning second place at the tournament. The Panthers lost to Chamblee Middle School of DeKalb County.
The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is a statewide competition with a game format that tests students’ knowledge of selected books in fourth through 12th grade.
Helen Ruffin, a former media specialist in DeKalb County, started the reading bowl several years ago to encourage students to
read.
“Our first- and second-place victories reflect the dedication and determination of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl teams in LCSS,” Liberty County School System Superintendent Dr. Valya S. Lee said. “The high-performing teams are also a reflection of the outstanding teachers and administrators who strongly support student achievement.”
Event organizers say the competition helps students increase test scores, reading comprehension, verbal communication and self-esteem.
