Long County’s soccer teams split their home games with Atkinson County on Tuesday.
The Lady Tide won their fourth game of the season, 10-0, while the Blue Tide dropped their fourth in a row, 1-0, to the ranked Rebels.
The girls’ game ended with 23 minutes left due to the mercy rule. Kelsey Higgason led all scorers with four goals. Nakia Hunter and Megan Higgason each had two goals, and Alyssa Anderson and Sam Garcia each had a goal.
Lady Tide head coach Brian Todd said the team stayed aggressive and pushed the ball. He was especially happy with Megan Higgason, who was moved to striker and was coming back from a sprained knee.
“We’ve hit the strength of the schedule, where we can make a real push in the region standings,” Todd said. “I’m proud of the way the girls keep fighting. We want that state-playoff berth.”
In the boys’ game, the woes continued for the Blue Tide as they fell to the Rebels, ranked No. 8 in the state according to eurosportscoreboard.com. It was the Tide’s fourth straight loss, with all of the losses coming by a single goal.
Despite the loss, Long County boys’ coach Paul Austin said he is happy with the way the team has been playing.
“I’m still pleased with our defense. We have only given up one goal in two games. Our offense still needs to finish,” he said.
“The last four games have been very hard to swallow. We are fighting through these tough games against very good teams … I truly believe that we just have to keep playing hard and the wins will come,” he added.
The Lady Tide improved their overall record to 4-2 and their Region 2-AA mark to 2-2, while the Blue Tide fell to 2-4 and 0-4, respectively.
The Tide teams are back on the field today at Metter.  The girls’ game starts at
5 p.m., with the boys’ game following at 7 p.m.
