So far, this week has been a good one for the Long County High School baseball team.
The Blue Tide won, 6-3, Monday in non-region action at Brunswick and claimed a 7-0 Region 2-AA win over Bacon County on Tuesday at home. With the two wins, Long County improved its overall record to 6-4 overall and its region mark to 3-2.
On Monday, Long County relief pitcher Ryan McGowan got the win, giving up two runs (one earned), three hits and three walks in three innings. Cody Fleck got the start, also going three innings, striking out two batters while giving up one earned run on three hits and three walks. Cole Ray picked up the save, closing out the game by striking out one batter. Zach Duncan was 2 for 3 at the plate for the Blue Tide, while Fleck, McGowan and Tristan Goodro each batted 1 for 2.
Blue Tide head coach Tyler Rogers said his players have been spending a lot of time in the batting cage at practice, and it showed in Monday’s game. He also praised his entire team’s effort and said many of them are showing good leadership.
“Cody Fleck has really grown into a leader. He is the outspoken leader, and these guys have a lot of respect for him,” Rogers said. “Don’t get me wrong, the other upperclassmen are great leaders as well in other ways and other areas, but Cody has really taken it upon himself to be the cornerstone of this team.”
At 5:45 p.m. today, the Tide face Toombs County in Lyons in another region game. Though the Bulldogs have been struggling this year, posting a 1-4 overall record and a 1-2 region mark, Rogers said that he expects them to be ready.
“Toombs will have good pitching … they will have a guy on the mound who will be able to bring it,” he said. “We have to play our game and if we do we will be there in the end.”
