The Long County High School soccer teams on Thursday split their games at Vidalia, with the boys winning, 4-1, and the girls losing, 1-0.
In the boys’ game, the Blue Tide jumped out to a 2-1 halftime lead and never looked back, posting two more scores in the second half against the Indians (5-5-1). Long County’s Alberto Nevarez had three goals and David Maji had one.
LCHS head coach Paul Austin said he was proud of his entire team.
“They all did great. Our team finally played the way I knew we could,” Austin said.
Thursday wasn’t quite as joyful for the Lady Tide, who were shutout for only the second time this season. This was the second close loss to the Lady Indians (10-1), who went into the game as the No. 7 AA team in the state, according to EurosportsScoreboard.com. When the two teams played last month, Vidalia came from behind to win, 6-4.
“This game was our hardest of the year,” Lady Tide head coach Brian Todd said. “It was a struggle for both teams. Our girls just came out grinding away, but just couldn’t put the ball in the goal.”
Though Todd was disappointed with the loss, he remains optimistic about the Lady Tide making the playoffs.
“We will bounce back, no doubt about it,” he said. “We have five games left in the regular season. We are hoping to get healthy by the end of the year for a possible state-playoff berth.”
With the loss, the Lady Tide fell to 6-3 overall and 4-3 in the region, while the Blue Tide improved 4-5 overall and 2-5.
On Monday, the Blue Tide were scheduled to travel to Savannah to face Benedictine Military School, and the Lady Tide were to play St. Vincent’s Academy. Results from those games will be in Friday’s paper.
