The Scott’s All*Stars eighth-grade boys’ basketball team finished second in a tournament last month in Charlotte.
The All*Stars had a 4-1 record and won their pool in the tourney, which was held March 22-23.
“This was the best our team has done in this tournament in our five trips during our five years.  It was a total team effort,” All*Stars founder Marcus Scott said.
The All*Stars are off to a 5-1 record this season. Scott credited the success to the team’s continued focus on man-to-man defense and good training from the coaching staff.
“Last year, we lost nine games by less than five points, primarily due to learning to play intense man-to-man defense and fatigue,” he said. “This year, we have the depth and knowledge to effective implement our man-to-man defense. Last year, the keys were begging to play zone, but I knew if we took our losses last year, we would be capable of greatness this year.”
Last year, the All*Stars finished 24-19.
The players also got the opportunity to tour Johnson Smith University and scrimmaged against some players from Johnson Smith’s basketball team.
“The memories they received from these campus tours are far more memorable than winning second place at the tournament,” Scott said. “The kids truly enjoyed the campus and did not want to leave.  They were invited back to take individual tour and would be given the opportunity to shadow a college student.”
The eighth-grade All*Stars play Saturday in Savannah, while all All*Stars teams will play April 11-12 in Jacksonville.
