The Long County High School baseball team wrapped up its season by losing to Atkinson County, 5-1, on April 23 in Ludowici.
Blue Tide starting pitcher Cody Fleck took the loss, going six innings and allowing nine hits and five runs, of which two were earned, and striking out six batters.
Long County reliever Cole Ray closed out the game, recording two strikeouts and one walk.
The Blue Tide’s bats were cold against the Rebels. Fleck and Matt Strickland both batted 1 for 3 at the plate to record Long County’s only hits.
“We got beat. Atkinson County came out swinging the sticks and we didn’t,” Long County coach Tyler Rogers said.
In regards to the season, Rogers praised his team, but said that at times it did play flat.
“We had some good moments, but didn’t play up to our potential on most days,” he said.
With the loss, the Blue Tide finished with a 13-13 overall record and 8-10 in Region 2-AA. Now, the underclassman and the coaching staff look to next year. Rogers said that he already is optimistic about 2015.
“We have a good group of young guys coming up to join this junior class. We need to get them as much playing time this summer as possible,” he said.
The coach said that between now and next season, he plans to work on improving the team’s batting.
“We have to focus hard on our approach at the plate and really break down our swings to fix the problems. We can’t let a lack of hitting hurt us again next year,” Rogers said.
