One-year-old thrown from car during crash

Now in burn center in Augusta

POSTED: May 16, 2014 7:31 p.m.

An accident early Friday in Walthourville sent an infant to a burn center in Augusta.
According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper David Harris, the traffic accident occurred about 7:21 a.m. on West Oglethorpe Highway near the Cedar Hill Mobile Home Park.
Harris said Ronette Ghant, 44, of Allenhurst was driving west behind a 2010 Dodge Avenger driven by Nakita Johnson, 24, also of Allenhurst. Johnson slowed to turn right into a residence.  Ghant, driving a 2001 Ford Explorer, struck Johnson from behind, spinning her car and ejecting a one-year-old girl, who reportedly was not properly secured into a seat from a rear window.
Johnson, according to the trooper, had to crawl under the Avenger to get the child, who sustained second degree burns and had to be taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center.
Johnson, who had two other children ages 3 and 5 in the vehicle, was cited for not having the children restrained, according to Harris.
Ghant was cited for following too closely, the trooper said.
