After two weeks of spring practice and conditioning, the Blue Tide football team dressed out Thursday for its annual Blue and White Scrimmage. Both the varsity and junior varsity squads saw plenty of action as parents and fans cheered from the bleachers. Head coach Ron Flott said the game went well, and all of the players enjoyed being back on the field.
“They were hungry and wanted to play football,” Flott said.
He said he was impressed with his team and proud of the 65 athletes who went through the two weeks of hot practices.
“This spring training was hot — it was between 95 and 100 degrees most of the days of practice, and all of these kids got out there on the field and did their best. I’m proud of all of them,” Flott said.
The coach said the defenses performed a little better in the Blue and White game, but that primarily was due to the wet conditions and having a young team.
“It was wet out there and we had a lot of young kids come out this year. We only have one senior on the offense, so they were a little behind. But overall, I got no complaints. We have some tough kids out there on both sides of the ball and they like to play football. I’m excited about the 2014 year,” Flott said.
Long County, coming off a 2-8 season, will play its first varsity game Aug. 29 against Tattnall County in Ludowici.
