About 150 men and women gathered May 2-3 to participate in the first CrossFit Fort Stewart 2014 Warrior Competition at Caro Fitness Center on post.
Participants included soldiers and family members from the Fort Stewart community and beyond.
Some traveled from as far as Fort Gordon, which is near Augusta.
“I've been training in a CrossFit program for about a year, and (I am) very excited to be here,” said Danielle Alex, a mother of four and military wife from Fort Gordon. “This means everything to me. I lost 65 pounds doing this.”
Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Randy Ray is the facility manager and CrossFit head trainer at Caro Fitness Center.
“I retired in 2008 and started working at the gym the same year,” Ray said. “The CrossFit program was developed for soldiers and their family members. We reconverted the facility in 2010 and started the program in 2011.”
Pfc. Paulo Velez of the 3rd Infantry Division’s 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, participated in the event after overcoming several obstacles.
“I started training for this event last December,” Velez said. “I’ve been doing it for about six months. It was very difficult. I just had my wisdom teeth pulled and still have the stitches in my mouth. I didn't think I would be able to make it today.”
The event began at 10 a.m. as participants were separated into six divisions. Judges were assigned to evaluate eight events: four on the first day and the remainder on the second day.
The top three contenders of each division received medals.
“This competition was a great success,” Ray said, “and I'm looking forward to doing it again next year.”
