When five area women recently laced up some walking shoes, wore some white clothing and added a ton of color, what they got was a feeling of accomplishment.
Liberty County School System transportation-department employees Joy Simmons, Jocelyn Chapman, Annette Walker, Christine Smith and Barbara Fletcher achieved that last Saturday when they ran their first 5K as part of the Savannah Color Run.
“We wanted to do something fun, and we never knew it would be so much fun to do a 5K. We had an absolute blast,” Simmons said. “It was the most fun we all had in quite a while.”
Simmons said the members of the Liberty County Group, as they called themselves for the race, have participated in exercise classes they do together throughout their day. She said they share a desire and commitment to better their minds and bodies, and saw the Color Run as an opportunity to do something together outside of work.
“I think it was everybody’s first 5K,” Simmons said. “We would actually stand there and have the people constantly dumping the colors on us. Getting dirty was the fun part.”
She said she wasn’t quite sure the group was ready yet to try a mud run.
“The mud run, well, you have to have a bit more endurance … for our group … this was something we could all go in and do together and still have fun,” she said. “There was no competition between us. It was just about getting out together and having some fun.”
She said they might try another 5K in the future.
“It made us feel good to see that we could do it,” she said.
