Liberty Regional Medical Center is celebrating National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week through Saturday.
This national recognition originated in 1975 under the auspices of the American Society for Medical Technology, now called the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.
To mark the week, Liberty Regional will host blood-typing demonstrations and scheduled tours of its medical laboratory. "We want to bring awareness to the public, our patients and potential patients, that medical laboratory professionals are critical members of the heath care team, Linda Jenkins, a medical technologist at the hospital said. "It is these dedicated health care professionals who are 'Delivering Today's Results for a Healthier Tomorrow.'
"Almost everyone has had a medical test at some point in their lives, Yet most people are unaware that, by doing so, the trained professionals who perform these vital tests are playing a major role in helping to save lives."
Phillip Ajayi, a pediatrician and member of the LRMC staff, said, "Diagnosing health problems can be a real challenge. Laboratory professionals spend countless hours dedicated to accurate testing to make important diagnoses and deliver results that literally save lives. This week is dedicated to making sure the public is aware of this rewarding profession and the hard work that goes into improving lives."
The public is invited to tour the laboratory on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m. The types of tests, instruments used and the meaning of test results will be discussed.
