Senior citizens from across the area came together Thursday to compete in the Long County Senior Citizen Field Day.
Local athletes were challenged by a team from Wayne County. Activities included a basketball toss, corn-hole tournament, egg relay, horse shoes and a checkers championship.
Approximately 25 seniors took part in the event, with the youngest being 60 years old and the eldest being 84.
Kelli Mock, coordinator for the Long County Senior Citizen Center and event organizer, said the day celebrated May being Older Americans Month. The theme this year was “Safe Today and Healthy Tomorrow.”
Mock said that this was the second year of the event, and it is something that all seniors had been looking forward to.
“This is really nice. It’s a fun event that is good for both Long County and Wayne County,” said Ludowici Mayor Pro-Tem Mary Hamilton, who attended the event. “It’s always nice to get together with other folks from the surrounding counties, and an event like this shows that you are never too old to get out and have a good time.”
Mock said that the center provides events like Field Day throughout the year, but also offers activities all the time. She said that at the center, board games, bingo, puzzles and Wii are available. She also said that an exercise program is offered, and that meals are provided. Mock said that currently, meals are provided to 54 seniors, with 29 being delivered.
She said that computers also are available and that the staff can assist in using them. According to current U.S. Census estimates, the population of Long County sits at 16,624 with 7.5 percent of its population being older than 65.
The Long County Senior Citizen Center is at 15 Thornton Drive NE in Ludowici. For more information, call Mock at 545-9508.
