The swimming pool at the East End Community Complex in Midway opened May 24 with a ribbon cutting and speeches from Liberty County Commissioner Marion Stevens Sr. and Midway Mayor Dr. Clemontine Washington.
Stevens, who represents the county’s 1st District, had pushed for the pool for 13 years. He said the pool’s opening was a dream come true for him.
He said this project would not have been possible without the use of the Special Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST, the 1-cent sales tax that supports projects just like this one, and its continued use would go to further complete phase II of the project at the Community Complex, including renovating the gym and building a band shell and a walking trail.
Washington told those in attendance that it was a great day for parents and children of east Liberty County, especially those in Midway.
She thanked Liberty County Recreation Department Director Jimmy Martin for keeping her informed of the progress that was being made in completing the pool. She also applauded Stevens for his diligence in securing the pool.
After the ribbon cutting, Stevens and Washington also joined together to pay for the first 30 children who entered the pool.
Within the first 45 minutes of its opening, over 90 people had signed in to the pool.
