All four Liberty County High School Lady Panther weight lifters did well at the 2014 Youth National Weight lifting Championships last weekend in Daytona Beach, Florida, with each of them finishing in the top-15 nationally.
Each Lady Panther placed among the top 20 and one brought home three medals. According to LCHS weight-lifting coach Keith McGee, Destiny Hall finished third in the nation in the 63-kilogram weight class.
“She got a bronze medal in the snatch, silver in the clean and jerk and a bronze medal for overall finish,” McGee said.
The coach said Alyisha Anderson finished sixth in the country for the 69-kilogram class and was the youngest competitor in her division.
McGee said the 58-kilogram division that Alexus Cisco and Jhanee O’Neil competed in was large enough to require two separate heats. Cisco finished 12th overall and O’Neil 15th.
“It was a learning experience for all of us, and for the first time out, we did well,” McGee said, adding that the Lady Panthers competed under the umbrella of Team Savannah.
McGee said they are preparing for the Georgia State Games, set for Aug. 2 in Atlanta. The coach said Lady Panther Nyla Waters is considering competing in the meet, as is former lifter and basketball player Kymberli Payno.
McGee said former team captain Brandi Alvin might compete if the event doesn’t conflict with her military-reserve duties. He is trying to see if former lifter Cynthia Kornegay is interested in competing. Alvin earned a gold medal and Kornegay brought home a silver medal in the 2012 Georgia State Games.
