Long County resident Jessie Parker died from injuries he sustained in a wreck Wednesday afternoon in Long County, according to Long County Emergency Management Director Bob Heffley.

Heffley said that at about 12:40 p.m. emergency personnel responded to a report of a head-on collision on Highway 196 near Flowers Road. He said originally it was reported that Parker was trapped and that extrication would be required. However, bystanders were able to help him get out of his vehicle.

Heffley said because Parker, a helicopter was called to fly him to a Savannah hospital.

However, Heffley said that before Parker was loaded onto the helicopter, he went into cardiac arrest and CPR was started. Heffley said that the flight nurse and the paramedic from helicopter joined Long/Liberty EMS personnel in their ambulance and the man was taken to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville. Heffley said Parker was treated on the way and at the hospital, but was pronounced dead a little after 1 p.m.

Heffley said a Fort Stewart soldier also was involved in the accident, and sustained what appeared to be minor injuries. He said that the soldier, whose identity was not reported, was taken to Winn Army Community Hospital to be checked out.

Other units responding included the Long County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia State Patrol, and the Long County Protective Services Auxiliary.

The accident is under investigation. More information on this story will be given as it is learned.
