Freshman quarterback Monteo Garrett enrolled in classes at Georgia Southern on Monday and will join the Eagles on scholarship as a part of the 2014 recruiting class, an official in the athletics department confirmed Tuesday.
A senior at Munford High School in 2013 and native of Talladega, Alabama, Garrett led the Lions to the Class AAAA playoff semifinals. The team went 12-2 and 7-0 on the way to a Region 5 championship.
“He’s an exciting player,” GSU coach Willie Fritz said about the dual-threat quarterback. “He’s a guy that does what we do offensively, and we’re looking forward to getting him in here.”
Garrett said in a scout.com interview that he was recruited by Western Kentucky, Murray State, Alabama State, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee and Kennesaw State, among others.
Garrett did not sign a letter of intent on National Signing Day because he hadn’t yet taken a college-entrance exam. He is the only quarterback in the 2014 recruiting class. The Eagles got a commitment from Hampton McConnell, a quarterback from West Forsyth, on Thursday as a part of the 2015 recruiting class.
Georgia Southern has three other quarterbacks — Kevin Ellison, Ezayi Youyoute and Favian Upshaw — currently active on the roster. Vegas Harley recently was moved from quarterback to safety, and Alfred Ramsby was moved from quarterback to running back.
Running back Chaz Thornton has been ruled academically ineligible and will not play in 2014. He will be a sophomore in 2015.
