The Long County 10-and-under baseball team won the Georgia Recreation Parks Association District 2 Class C Championship on Monday in Ludowici by sweeping two games against Pierce County.
After being beaten by Pierce last week in early tournament action, Long County had to win two games against the Bears to take the title in the double-elimination tourney. Playing in front of a large crowd, the home team beat Pierce, 6-1, in Monday’s early game. In the championship game, Long County claimed an 8-0 win.
In the first game, starting pitcher Noah Kuhaneck got the win on 5 ⅔ hitless innings. Daniel Edwards got the win in the championship game, while Jake Cooper picked up the save.
Long County Recreation Department Director Henry Strickland said that winning this championship was especially sweet because this was the first year that Long County had players in this age division compete in live-pitch ball. “I’m proud of this bunch of boys, and also for all of the support that we got from the community,” Strickland said. “The support was monumental. This was the first time that we had boys this age play in live pitch, so this win is big for us.”
With the win, Long County advanced to the state playoffs next month in Blakely. Long County’s first game will be at 3 p.m.
July 8.
