An abandoned, starving dog was found Wednesday locked in a Hinesville home. Hinesville Police Department and Liberty County Animal Control officers rescued the dog after receiving an anonymous tip.
A scan of the animal’s microchip revealed its name is Juicy, and her rescuers believe she’s been mostly alone in the dwelling for about three months. Animal Control Officer Richard Edwards said open bags of food were strewn around the residence.
The 39-pound mixed-breed dog should weigh about 70 pounds, according to the veterinarian who examined her.
Edwards said Juicy was adopted last year from a Savannah shelter by a couple who had a newborn. She proved too rambunctious to be around the infant, so the couple reportedly gave the dog to a friend. Police have a warrant for the owner’s arrest on animal cruelty charges.
Juicy will be returned to the Savannah shelter, where she will be nursed back to health, according to Edwards.
