The Hinesville Military Affairs Committee will hold the second annual Veterans Salute Day from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Bryant Commons.
Committee Chairman David Anderson said the event will honor active-duty service members, family members and veterans of all services, past and present.
Bryant Commons is across from the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce, 425 W. Oglethorpe Highway in Hinesville.
Anderson said proceeds from the event will go to the Veterans Memorial Walk, a special tribute that will be at Bryant Commons. Last year’s Veterans Salute Day raised $6,000, he said.
He said the walk will be about the size of a baseball field and will honor Liberty County veterans of all branches of service during peacetime and war, from the American Revolution to recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Memorial Walk Chairman George Holtzman said HMAC hopes to have completed fundraising for the memorial so construction can begin in time to meet a hoped-for ribbon cutting on Veterans Day 2015.
“This event is for all military and those who support them,” Anderson said. “Veterans Salute Day kicks off more than a week of military appreciation that will conclude with a Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans of Foreign War, then the annual Veterans Day Parade.”
Anderson said this year’s event will have live music from the Armstrong State University’s orchestra, the 3rd Infantry Division Band, 3rd Class Citizens and others. There will be a corn-hole tournament and children’s games with inflatables, numerous food vendors, static military displays, a car show and representatives from local veterans’ service organizations.
Raffle prizes donated by local businesses and individual sponsors will be drawn for throughout the day.
Raffle tickets for high-dollar items, such as a flat-screen TV and veteran-themed quilt, will be sold for $5. A 50/50 raffle of all tickets will be held towards the end of the day.
