The Fort Stewart community learned today that one of their own was killed in a tragic airplane accident in Venice, Florida on Sunday.
According to a statement released by Fort Stewart, “Sgt. 1st Class Ommy Irizarry, 36, of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, died while walking on a beach with his 9-year-old daughter when a plane struck them Sunday afternoon, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. Irizarry was a platoon sergeant assigned to Fort Stewart's Warrior Transition Battalion and had deployed twice to Iraq, according to the press release. "This is a heart-wrenching situation, especially losing a loved one while on vacation to celebrate a family milestone," 3rd Infantry Division and Stewart-Hunter commander Maj. Gen. Mike Murray said in the release. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Irizarry family."
According to the release, the Irizarry family was in Florida celebrating their ninth wedding anniversary.  On Sunday, Irizarry wrote on his facebook page about how happy and in love he was with his wife on their anniversary. “Thank you for being with me through thick and thin. I love you with all my heart…” he wrote.
