Former Bradwell Institute track star Quintunya Chapman earned a bronze medal in the heptathlon at the eighth annual North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Under-23 Championship in Athletics event last weekend in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Chapman, a junior standout for the University of Georgia, tied for first place in the 100-meter hurdles (13.81 seconds), placed second in the 200 dash (24.50), placed fifth in the high jump (1.56 meters), set a record in the shot put (13.06), raced to a second-place finish in the 800 run (2:29.14), was fourth both in the long jump (5.62) and the javelin throw (28.43).

“Being on Team USA was so amazing,” she said. “Meeting my teammates and traveling to Canada was an experience of a lifetime.”

Chapman excelled in the 100 and 200 dashes in her high-school career and showed potential in the jump events.

After posting two good seasons for the Bulldogs, she was encouraged to enter the multi-events and, according to UGA heptathlon coach Petros Kyprianou, Chapman had to learn five of the events from scratch.

“My biggest adjustment going into multi-events was taking on the workload and learning new events that I have never done before,” Chapman said. “My expectations for next season are to, hopefully, surpass the success that I came across over this past season. I'll be more prepared and have more knowledge on how to compete in multi-events and how to train.”

Chapman finished the 2014 indoor/outdoor season by being named first-team All-American and being Southeastern Conference runner-up in the heptathlon.
