A wreck Thursday night at the intersection of Rye Patch and Wilkerson roads in Long County sent four people to the hospital, according to Ludowici/Long County Volunteer Fire Department Chief Richard Truman.

Truman said that the wreck, which happened around 8:50 p.m., involved a Long County woman driving a Chrysler Pacifica with her two young children inside and two military dependents in a Dodge Avenger. Truman said that the driver of the Avenger was a minor male and his passenger was a minor female.

When EMS personnel arrived at the scene, they extricated the Avenger driver and his passenger, both of whom appeared to have minor injuries, Truman said. They were transported to Winn Army Community Hospital on Fort Stewart.

The Pacifica driver and her 7-year-old daughter also sustained minor injuries and were taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, according to the fire chief, who added that a second child, a small boy, also was in the vehicle but was not injured.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Harry Middleton said that the Pacifica was traveling south on Rye Patch Road and the Avenger was traveling east on Wilkerson Road when the wreck occurred. He said it was determined from the initial investigation that the Avenger failed to yield the right-of-way at the intersection, resulting in the Pacifica slamming into the driver’s side of the vehicle. Middleton said that the uninjured little boy who had been in the Pacifica was picked up from the scene by his grandmother.
