Two Hinesville teenagers died Sunday night in a single-car wreck in Long County.
Cassandra Perry and Jasmine Naylor, both 17, were killed when the 2006 Toyota Scion they were traveling in struck a pine tree on Tibet Road.
According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Joel Mock, the vehicle collided with a pine tree about 9:30 p.m. after 18-year-old driver Uzuri Burkes lost control of the car.
Perry and Naylor, who were sitting the back of the car, were killed on impact. Burkes and 19-year-old Xavier Bell, who was riding in the front passenger seat of the car, sustained minor injuries and were treated on the scene.
The wreck remains under investigation.
Naylor was a student at Bradwell Institute and news of her death caused a wave of emotion felt throughout the school.
“She was well liked by a variety of students, not just a certain group,” BI Principal Dr. Vicki Albritton said. “She was just a cheerful young lady. She was a good girl who we’re sorry to lose.”
Albritton said immediately after hearing the news she gathered the school's counselors together before making the announcement.
“I made the announcement and did the moment of silence in her memory,” the principal said.
After being informed by Naylor’s mother that the family was not affiliated with a church since moving to Hinesville in February, Albritton took a school counselor with her “to minister to the family” at their home.
In addition, a chart has been created and each day food is being delivered to the family.
Albritton said students have been actively seeking ways to assist the family and will be vital in deciding how to honor Naylor's life.
“We’re going to do something in her memory. We just haven’t worked that out yet,” she said.
