Ossabaw annual meeting set

POSTED: January 14, 2016 10:00 a.m.

The Ossabaw Island Foundation’s annual meeting will celebrate the 103rd birthday of Eleanor “Sandy” West, the last private owner and current resident of Ossabaw Island.

The foundation’s yearly event brings a little bit of Ossabaw Island to the mainland for one night. It is an opportunity to learn about past and future projects on the island, meet the board and staff of the foundation, and learn a little bit about Ossabaw.

The meeting is timed to celebrate West’s birthday, which is Jan. 17. She will not attend the meeting.

Dr. Victor Thompson will give the keynote, “Living and Feasting on Ossabaw Island 3,800 Years Ago.” He is the director of the University of Georgia’s Center for Archaeological Sciences and project director, Ossabaw Island archaeological excavation and field school for archaeology students.

Roger Parker, a Richmond Hill native and past island manager for the Torrey and West families, will speak on “My Stories about Ossabaw Island, 1956-2016.”

The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm St. in Savannah.
